  • introduction
    • a red r3d 4K shot has been graded in Color, and rendered twice in HD
    • one render is Prores HQ, the other render is Uncompressed 10b 422
  • pros of Prores HQ
    • Prores HQ is 6 times smaller
  • quality comparison
    • each render has been opened in Photoshop, reframed and zoomed 2x so as to have only a detail
  • in pictures
  • observations
    • the Prores HQ render and the Uncompressed 10b 422 render are almost identical. Looking very carefully, one could notice the Prores HQ seem to have a touch of less noise
    • this is confirmed by the difference between the two, that is completely dark
  • conclusions
    • as a render codec out of color-grading, Prores HQ is very good, all the more so as it is faster to render Prores HQ than Uncompressed 10b 422 (there is 6 times less data to be written on disk)
    • for the sake of porting the comparison on this site, the renders were processed through photoshop, reframed and zoomed. The results are consistant with what I observed on my color-grading station in full quality
